A new take on particle therapy dosimetry

Particle therapy is prescribed using a photon-equivalent dose: the absorbed dose multiplied by a biological weighting factor that corrects for differences in tissue response to irradiation. However, an increasing variety of approaches used to derive this weighting factor has introduced inconsistencies in dose prescription, preventing accurate comparisons of treatments between different centres and modalities, and limiting the value of clinical trials.
