British surgeons have welcomed a ‘glimmer of hope’ in the battle against deadly pancreatic cancer, thanks to a pioneering new treatment that combines targeted chemotherapy and radiotherapy to shrink tumours before they are operated on. The disease claimed the life of actor Alan Rickman, 69, last month and advances in treating it have been limited, with survival rates virtually unchanged in 50 years.
