Green light for proton centres

The green light has been given for work to start on two new proton-beam therapy centres at University College London hospitals NHS foundation trust and the Christie NHS foundation trust in Manchester this summer. A total of £250m in government money has been invested in the facilities, which will provide a highly targeted form of radiotherapy using beams of protons – the “hearts” of atoms – instead of intense X-rays to destroy hard-to-reach cancers.
