Image-guided radiotherapy for bladder cancer: new standard of care?

Results from a small prospective Indian study suggest that dose-escalated image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT) could replace radical cystectomy as the standard of care for bladder preservation in localised muscle-invasive bladder cancer. Reporting in the International Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology, Physics, Vedang Murthy, MD, of Tata Memorial Centre in Mumbai, found an 83% rate of bladder preservation at 3 years in 44 patients treated with IGRT, and acute and late toxicities were lower than with conventional radiotherapy.
