New cancer unit to officially open at Eastbourne District General Hospital

The new £14.5 million cancer treatment centre offering radiotherapy was officially opened at Eastbourne DGH on Monday. The centre is an extension of the Brighton-based Sussex Cancer Centre and includes two linear accelerators and a CT scanner. Its opening means patients can receive all their care in the local centre, instead of having to travel to Brighton every day for treatment.

That’s great news for cancer patients in East Sussex, of course, and the unit has already proved a success in reducing travel times for them. But there are still no radiotherapy facilities in West Sussex, a bigger county, and the only one in England without radiotherapy.
