Inspired by her colleague (and chair of Action Radiotherapy) Professor Pat Price, Emily Roberts decided to Run for Radiotherapy this year with her close friend Justine Anderson to raise as much money as possible to support the charity’s work to improve radiotherapy awareness and access to the best treatment for patients in the UK. Action Radiotherapy also supports radiotherapy professionals with the provision of a daily radiotherapy news email service, and providing resources for radiotherapy professionals.
Emily first ran the British 10K in London last year raising £675 for Action Radiotherapy. This year her close friend of 10 years, Justine Anderson, joined her after reading about the charity and felt it was an important cause to run for. Together they raised £570 and are still hoping to raise more.
Action Radiotherapy’s ongoing campaign – Best 4 Six – is focused on trying to ensure every cancer patient in the UK has access to the best type of radiotherapy for their particular cancer. One in three of us will get cancer at some point in our lives and half of those (one in six of us) will benefit from radiotherapy. Modern radiotherapy is a very powerful and precise treatment which can cure many cancers. It is cutting-edge and cost-effective compared to other forms of treatment. Action Radiotherapy is working to highlight the problem and we have had great success in the past few years bringing media attention to the issue of lack of consistent access to the best radiotherapy.
As a charity, we do not receive any government funding and rely entirely on public donations to continue our work. We are very grateful for the tremendous contribution from Emily and Justine this year, whose fundraising efforts will allow us to continue our hard work in achieving our ambitions for radiotherapy in the UK.
