Particle therapy offers safer re-irradiation

Head-and-neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is a particularly difficult cancer to cure, with a post-treatment recurrence risk of up to 30% and a 12–13% five-year incidence of second new tumours. Patients treated for recurrence with surgical resection plus re-irradiation can experience long-term disease control, but rates of severe toxicity are high. An international collaboration has investigated the use of particle therapy for re-irradiation.
