Patients who fear they have cancer are promised tests in less than a month under plans to save 30,000 more lives a year

The NHS will have to provide ‘definitive’ results within four weeks of a patient being referred by a GP for cancer tests, according to the proposal, part of a £2 billion strategy unveiled today by an independent ‘cancer taskforce’. Outdated radiotherapy machines must be replaced, the numbers of cancer doctors and nurses raised and radical action taken to cut smoking and obesity, said Cancer Research UK boss Harpal Kumar, leading the review.
