Proton therapy unit deal delayed

A stalled deal for $110 million of federal and state funding has delayed the southern hemisphere’s first proton therapy unit. The stand-off comes as questions linger over the technical capabilities of a US-based company in line to provide the cutting-edge cancer therapy. Despite the federal budget committing $68m and a $44m commitment in the state budget, no funding has been received for the $325m project, said South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute executive ­director Steve Wesselingh.
