Scandal of life-saving NHS cancer machines lying idle: New high-tech radiotherapy can kill cancer more effectively. So why are patients being denied it?

Thousands of cancer patients are missing out on potentially life-saving radiotherapy treatment as the latest technology sits idle in NHS hospitals. An investigation by Good Health into two of the latest techniques, which can give more targeted and effective treatment, reveals wide variations in access to advanced radiotherapy across England. Professor Pat Price, a radiation oncologist and chair of the Action Radiotherapy charity, adds: ‘With one in three people getting cancer, one in six should get radiotherapy. Advanced radiotherapy really improves survival rates. Yet some NHS patients are getting second best when it comes to radiotherapy, depending on their type of cancer and where they live.’
