Site-specific margins enhance proton plans

The finite range of a proton beam provides one of the main dosimetric advantages of proton therapy over photon techniques. But while the beam range in water can be well defined, this is not the case in a patient. To exploit the full potential of proton therapy, the in-patient range must be predicted as accurately as possible during treatment planning, with appropriate margins employed to account for range uncertainties.
