Theranostic nanoparticles enter clinical trials

The efficacy of radiotherapy can be boosted using high-atomic-number materials such as gold and gadolinium to increase the target’s absorption of ionizing radiation. Gadolinium offers an additional advantage as it also acts as an MRI contrast agent. Speaking at last week’s AAPM Annual Meeting, Lucie Sancey, representing the FENNEC team directed by Olivier Tillement at the Institut Lumière Matière in France, described the translation of this approach into the first clinical trials.
