APPGRT members visit elekta site

On Friday the 12th of October, APPGRT Vice Chairpersons Grahame Morris MP and Gillian Keegan MP visited the Elekta campus in Crawley. Elekta create equipment and software used to improve, prolong and save the lives of people with cancer and brain disorders. During the visit, the group were invited to a tour of the factory where 700 people are employed.

 

Elekta make between 30 - 40% of the Linacs in the world and 95% of the machines they manufacture in Crawley are exported throughout the world. The group had the opportunity to visit the new Unity machine combining MRI technology and radiotherapy for even more accurate planning and treatment delivery.

 

Tom Beazley, SVP Portfolio Excellence and Strategic Partnerships told us “Elekta were delighted to have the chance to host the visit and share our thoughts on the Manifesto for Radiotherapy. At Elekta we are proud of our long history of collaborating with the NHS to improve outcomes for cancer patients and fully support this initiative to improve cancer survival in the UK. It provided a great opportunity to a showcase Elekta Unity, the latest innovation in radiotherapy MR-RT”

Launch of The APPGRT Manifesto

On the 12th of September 2018, the APPG for Radiotherapy launched their Manifesto at the Academy of Medical Sciences in London. Tim Farron MP, the Chair of the APPG, was joined by numerous radiotherapy professionals including representatives from the Royal College of Radiologists, The Society and College of Radiographers, the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine. Charities and the radiotherapy industries including Varian Medical Systems, Brainlab Ltd, AdvaMed, Vision RT and Elekta Ltd also showed their support by attending the event.

 

At the launch the manifesto was discussed, highlighting the importance of increasing the NHS cancer budget for radiotherapy which would be used to provide cancer patients in the UK with world-class patient first radiotherapy treatments from efficient modern machines.  Alongside this, improvements into the accessibility of cancer radiotherapy across the UK were discussed and how the APPGRT will work with the government and NHS to achieve their 10-year goals.

Launch of APPGRT

On the 22nd of May 2018, in Westminster Tim Farron MP launched the APPG (All Party Parliamentary Group) on Radiotherapy with cross party support with an aim to develop a new patient manifesto for radiotherapy treatment in the UK. Action Radiotherapy was confirmed as the secretariat. With adequate resources we have the capability of providing a world leading high quality cost effective nationally consistent innovative radiotherapy service.
