Jo qualified as a Therapeutic Radiographer in 2004 from Sheffield Hallam University and worked at Leicester Royal Infirmary and Weston Park Hospital in Sheffield, before becoming an academic in 2009. Jo is now a Senior Lecturer at Sheffield Hallam University, which is the largest provider of radiotherapy education in the UK, teaching across the entire portfolio of radiotherapy courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level, as well as interprofessional education.
Jo's is hugely passionate about the recruitment and retention of Therapeutic Radiographers from the development of foundation courses, through to supporting advanced practice. Having been involved with, and led on, a number of recruitment and retention projects, including the Strategic Interventions in Higher Education Disciplines (SIHED) project, addressing the decline in applications for degree programmes in therapeutic radiography and other allied health disciplines. Jo's motivation within this field is driven by evidence based practice and years of experience as an Admissions Tutor.
As a STEMnet Ambassador Jo routinely runs roadshows around the country, promoting the profession and educating students and educators about the role Radiotherapy plays in the cancer pathway, working extensively with clinical partners and schools and colleges to highlight the role Radiotherapy plays in treating cancer.
Jo is currently a UK Observer with the Society of Radiographers and sits on the committee for 'Leading the Way in Radiography Advanced Practice.'
